Traditionally, the [FED-STD-209D] standards were implemented. Following the metric standards system was adopted [FED-STD-209E], and was discontinued due to unification to ISO standards. However, the conventional method of [FED-STD-209D] is still practiced in a bigger way.

FED-STD-209D

The criterion for division of class of [FED-STD-209D] is the presence of number of 0.5μm dia particles in space of 1 cubic feet (1 foot = approx. 30 cm). In case the number of floating particles within 1 cubic feet space is below 100 then it is classified into [Class 100] and when the number is below 1,000, it is classified into [Class 1,000].

FED-STD-209E

[FED-STD-209E] is a metric system standard. The feet dimensions are also kept for reference. The presence of 0.5μm dia particles in the space of 1 cubic meter is represented in form of power of 10χ, where value of χ represents the class. For example, in case of presence of 1,000 floating particles of size 0.5μm dia within space of 1 cubic meter, then value equate to [1,000 = 103] representing class as [Class 3]. To be more specific in representing the usage of Metric system, the notation used is M3.
